Category: accessible Devices
ok, I am looking to get a new phone soon, and need some suggestions on the most accessible phone to get. Please tell me which company these phones go with, oh yeah, I would like to be able to browse the net on my phone as well. So what phone out there speaks the most and or has a software that can make the phone accessible
a couple of things to consider.
1. bargett
2. touch or non touch screen, normal or full keyboard keypat
Yep I agree.
huh? bargett? What's that?
Maybe budget? LOL, not sure!
That's sort of what I though but I wasn't sure.:)
Well, aside from all the junk posts that got in to your topic from people wanting to have small talk... Anyway, from personal experience, I have Verizon Wireless and use the HTC Ozone with Talks. I got a good deal for it and it's only $99 for Talks for Windows Mobile phones with VZW. The Ozone is a candybar phone which means it doesn't slide or flip, basically no cover so you should lock the phone when not in use whichcan sometimes be a pain. The keyboard is a bit cramped and I am having some issues with sluggishness because Talks is a major memory hog so you would have to purchase a memory card which do run pretty cheap these days. I also have to have a data plan to go online and do email and that's $29 a month per phone. I do love my phone aside from those issues, and I just barely got it 2 weeks ago so I'm still getting used to it. The SDcards for both mine and my husband's phones should be here soon and I'll let you know if it helps with Talks functionality or not. I've heard a lot of people like Mobile Speak for their Smart Phones and that's $229 so it's more expensive. Somethings you might want to consider when choosing a company and phone:
What company has good service in your area?
What are the plans for each company like as far as flexibility and affordability?
What type of phone do youfeel comfortable using? (Flip, slider, candybar, touch screen)
Another suggestion I have is to go in to a cellular store like Verizon ATNT or T-mobile and play around with their phones. They probably won't have the screen-readers available, so I'm not sure what you can do there, but the only way you'll know what type of phone you're comfortable with is to check them out firsthand. Good luck.
Yep I agree with that too. Oh just so everybody knows, MS version 4 has been officially released today:) Good luck. I think going to a store and playing around with the phones is a fantastic idea. Good luck with whatever you choose.
I am looking for a phone that has either a q keyboard, or a regular phone it canflip and I am looking for all companies so just let me know what you all have and how accessible each phone and/or software tends to be. T-mobile, atnt, vzw, booste mobile, ntelos, frog plan, any phone will do if it is a good phone and service.
Do you want a phone that comes with speech out of the box, or one that you have to install speech into?
Well, I just bought a copy of mobile speak and tonight I will be installing it on my HTC touch pro2. I'm excited. I'll tell you how it goes.
thanks faithful, I do not care about whether the phone comes with speech or i have to install software...tell experiences with all of it
try nokia n86, n79. both come with nomal keyboard, but have all the function that you mention on your original post. if you want to have both normal and q keypad, try nokia e75. i believe all of these phone capable of installing either talks or MobileSpeach on them. heard decent thing about blackberry phone too, if you want to consider that.
Blackberries don't have screen-readers yet, do they? The Ozone has a Qwerty keyboard.
no they don't. OK, I have the HTC touch pro2. I love the responsiveness of the phone, but there's one problem: it doesn't have a left or right softkey. Now, I sent a message to codefactory's help desk, and I will be calling handytech. Codefactory has said that you do not have to use the touch screen on your phone if you do not want to, so we will see. I'm still holding out hope. BTW, I'm using loquendo voices on mine and they're awesome!
Hi. I use a Nokia N96, Symbian 60 3rd ed dual slide phone running Talks 4.11.3. brilliant for browsing the net and using Messenger and Skype, it also has built-in WiFi. Mine is Vodafone, but unlocked to all networks. You have 16 gigs of memory on the phone and it'll work with Sandisk memory cards, giving you another 7.3 gigs to work with, 23.3 gigs all together. OK, the menu and function keys located on the top half of the phone are a bit small, but you get used to that in time. Also, a couple of those buttons plus the media buttons located underneath the screen if you slide it out towards you with the function keys at the bottom don't really do an awful lot, I'm not sure why they're there to be honest, but that's just the way it's meant to be I suppose, lol. Camera and volume buttons are found on the side opposite the memory card flap. Only real drawbacks are the new Tweets60 1.38.0 which really struggles, for some reason best known to Ravensoft methinks, and on my phone certainly, IM Plus keeps crashing so I keep having to reregister the blasted thing, but if you're wanting a decent phone capable of surfing the web, I'd thoroughly recommend some of the latest Nokia E series and N series phones. The N95 is similar, I don't think it's a slide phone, but that also, has built-in WiFi, so no more £400 phone bills if you wish to go online and you haven't access to your PC or lappy. You just need the network key wherever you're based at the time, then you need to define a destination for your access point and the rest is easy, off you go. O and one more thing, Talks and any other audio do not mix on the later N-series phones, so I'd mute Talks before clicking on audio flash content, music, radio stations Etc.
Jen.
I use a dash3g with mobile speak 4 and love it.
Well, I don't know what I did to my phone. OK, I do know part of what I did. I tried to uninstall MS 4 the wrong way, and now whenever I try to install it, it says that an application is running on my mobile device or something like that! Man, I'm so dumb!
which cell cariers does the nokias run on, and what is an a-3g
a dash 3g is a type of phone.ATNT is the cell carrier that has simbian. I don't know if T mobile or sprint do though. I know verizon only offers windows mobile devices. I fixed my HTC touch pro2. It was something I did, not the software. It's running fine now, and I'm loving it!
Nokia phones are Symbian-based, and they run on either AT&T or T-Mobile.
Yeah windows mobile phones run on all the big 4 networks where as Nokia's .. well the accessible nokia's will pretty much limit you to At&T and T-Mobile as mentioned above. If you go with either of those you will have to get a lisence for Talks or Mobile Speak which can be an additional charge. ( i believe at&t still have a promotion where you can get mobile speak for nokia or windows mobile phones for $89, and verizon has talks for windows mobile for $99 though i heard talks on windows mobile doesn't work very well .. great on nokia phones though) Your only other option right now is the iPhone , which is a touch screen device and has a full screen reader included on the phone so you wont have to buy anything edxtra and can browse the web and everything right out of the box. There are phones on verizon like the EnV that have sppeach out of the box as well but this is only for text and a few phone settings and wont work with the web browser. So if you don't mind learning to use a touch screen the iPhone is the easy choice .. if you want real buttons .. Then personally i suggest nokia over windows mobile .. and if you go nokia At&T and and unlocked nokia may be your cheapest option in the long run, .. Will cost more up front but will be cheaper in the end.
ATNT does have the MS license for 99 dollars, and the fact that talks from verizon is crap has already been established.
ok, so how is it possible for a totally blind user to access a touch screen iphone
I have a nokia n75 which isn't manufactured anymore...but I got Mobile Speak through AT&T for $89.
it comes out to $95 and some change with tax...just thought I'd add that.
I'm not completely sure how they do it, but I know it can be done.:)
using a touch screen iPhone with voice over is pretty easy but takes a little getting used to. you place your finger on th ephone and move it around .. the phone will announce what you are touching, when your finger is on an item you want you can use another finger to double tap anywhere else on the screen while keeping your finger on the item you want . I found that way easier than trying to double tap on the item it self with the finger you used to navigate to it as as not being able to see the screen it not always easy to double tap on exactly the same spot.
the iPhone, Windows Mobile and Symbian phones that AT&T carries require a $30 unlimited data plan. you have a choice on rather or not to get the data plan with the unlocked Nokia's. It is only $15 if you choose to have it, and 10 per line with the family texting plan. I'm not sure about the other providers. Just something to keep in mind.
I know it's 30 dollars with verizon
does anyone have t-mobile? Wat is unlocked nokia, and which software is better for them...also anyone use talks or mobile speak with other phones
unlocked means the phone isn't locked to A carrier network speciffically like for example if you go to an AT&T or T-Mobile Store you will be getting a phone that they have locked speciffically to their network and has some of their speciffic software or apps on it. these phones are also less expensive than their unlocked versions because they are selling you the phone for less in exchange for you agreeing to give them a ton of money every month for the next 2 years. A unlocked phone cost more upfront but can end up being less in the end depending on the plan you choose . For example AT&T and t-Mobile both have plans that include unlimited talk and data for $60 to $80 a month with no contract providing you already have a phone and thats where getting your hands on an unlocked phone can come in handy. Also has pointed out above if you have an unlocked phone you could just use the $15 non smart phone data plan instead of the $30 smart phone data plan that are required for most of the nokia's window mobile and the iPhone. Though if AT&T still has the nokia 6650 its a good phone and uses the $15 data plan.Talks and mobile Speak only work on symbian or windows mobile phones so there is no using htem on any other phones . All the unlocked nokia phones that work on AT&T will work on T-Mobile as well but not on T-Mobile's 3G data network which means with most of them you will have to use the slower Edge network for data if you choose to get a data plan. Being that i am fortunate enough to live in a area with 3g coverage and have a compatible phone i can't say how much slower edge is than 3G.
ok, well now if anyone has a phone for sell let me know...I am interested in getting a phone prefferably with talks of mobile speak install already
You might want to check out the mobile speak lists. I know sometimes people who have phones for the buying will post on there.
Actually, somebody just advertized an a nokya 82 and 97 with MS 4 on the MSS email list. If you are interested here's a copy of the email I got.
Hello all,
I have two unlocked phones for sale.
A Nokia N97, as well as a Nokia N82.
They both have ms4 device license, and I've only had the N97 for a month, and the N82 for about 6 months.
I am asking $425, including shipping.
The reasons I am selling:
I am moving carriers to a CDMA network.
To be more specific, Verizon Wireless.
They don't support simbian phones, so I need to find a happy home for the two phones.
If anyone is interested in any one, or both of those phones, please reply at:
jahmallovato@samobile.net
wish i had $400 sitting around i'd like to get my hands on an n97
No you don't want an N97 if you use Talks! It's touch screen and horrible.
Hi, I am looking for a new phone to. I have an N 73 with talks on it. I am in the uk. I am not sure what is the best phone that supports the talks. I think it might be n 51 or something lik that.
Hi, I know there has been a lot of posting so I will get to the point. My personal experence with mobel speak 2.08 and now he upgrade 4.0 has been quiet rewarding. I would pick a phone that can use moble speak for mobel windows or now just moble speak for. Things that moble speak can do, are present heads, links, forms and etc. Read more on code factories website. I know it cause money so its gona bee a fincatual decition on what a person desides on getting. In the end I love the moble speak platfrom cause of the fuctionality it prevides Hi, I know there has been a lot of posting so I will get to the point. In Enclosing I know some can not afford moble speak but if you are able to check it out for yourself. My phone I am using now is a Moda Q9c. Not sure what my upgrade will bee maybe an HTC TOUCH PRO2 OR an Samson intrepid.
Blackberries do have screenreaders its not for all read the humanware website.
sprint offers a unlimited date plan wihch includes web browsing, texting, anytime any moble, "you can call any moble phone and its free." It comes in a family plan or individual plan.
yeah I heard...which phones work with the sprint network, b.c we were considering that plan but people kept saying the phones that work with talks and mobile speak were only good for t-mobile and atnt and verizon for the talks...anything good on the sprint network
No, no one said that. You can have phones from Sprint too.
Yes you can have phones with sprint, I am a sprint user. I have a q9c but want to move to a HTC touch pro2 or a samson intrepid. Not sure with one I want at this time. Hope this helps you on making your decition. Oh the HTC snap by sprint can have moble speak installed on it to.
why not just check the mobile speak website it has a list of all phones that work with different carriers
I am aware that the n97 is a touch screen phone, however its supported with mobile speak 4 and by the new version of talks 4.5 which will be out at the end of the month . it's got 32GB internal storage which is why i want it and has a decent slide out keyboard and decent camera so i can still use it with something like KNFB reader or other such software apps. As for OK now on to the other matter .. if you are going with spring or verizon (or any of the other smaller companies like Metro PCS, Cricket, US Celluar or etc) then your only choice is a Windows mobile phone which requires mobile speak ..if you want to go with at&T and or T- mobile then you can use either a nokia (also known as symbian) or windows mobile which gives you the choice of using talks and or mobile speak. To further break this down , If you use a nokia phone you can use talks or mobile speak, if you use windows mobile .. no matter which of the networks you are on mobile speak is your only choice. (yes ther is one phone on verizone called the ozone that you can get talks for but i haven't heard any good things about using talks on that phone) Also unless things have changed recently Sprints unlimeted plan is $99 and stillrequires a 2 year contract. At&T and T-mobile both have pre paid plans that can include unlimited voice data and text for less than that .. and no contract.
ok, so I talked to this guy who is selling nokia's with talks on them...I am not interested in a phone without a qwerty keyboard, b.c I would like to use the net, and no phones with touch screens either, so which phones are best witha qwerty keyboard for sprint, or a local company if at all possible...maybe t-mobile too b.c they have reasonable plans
from sprint they have the HTC snap and you get internet, texting, the ability to call any moble phone no matter what ntet work under 100. Att, verizon charge to add the internet. I know this will probly have people frowning at me but just putting what is out there. As far as no contract, good if you have crappy credit, not good for you cuase the company has no obligation to you as a user. If you question my state ment google or bing what "no contract" really means. Hope this helps you, oh, yes I do like VZ or Verizon and its net work. Used both sprint and Verizon.
i actually use the web and text quite a bit from my n86 which doesn't have a qwerty keyboard. if you get a nokia with talks then you need to go with t mobile. if you want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard then i reccomend a nokia E71 or E72 or any other E series phone. If you want to go with spring or any of the local carriers just go to one of their stores and have them show you their windows mobile phones and choose one you like the feel/ keyboard on.
ok...that might be whats best for me...b.c i need a qwerty keyboard for convenience thinking of sprint or vzw
Actually i have had phones with no contract and had no issues getting customer service for my plan. And i currently know people that use the unlimited no contracts plans with out any issues, The bottom line is the company is still going to want to get money out of you each month, so they will like you to remain with them contract or not. If you want to go with vzw or sprint then go to their stores and find a windows mobile phone you like as i said above. reader
I have had the nokia n82 and the nokia n95. The nokia n82 is a normal phone with very accessible buttons and I had talks installed on it. The nokia n95 is a slide phone (it can slide both ways), the buttons aren't quite as accessible, it also had talks installed on it. The nokia n82 and n95 have exactly the same operating system and their functions work in exactly the same way. If you go to there is a list of phones on there which support talks.
thanks...has anyone used the motorola click
